Late Thursday, a Citrus County couple found an 8-year-old boy wandering more than a mile from his home.
Citrus County deputies say they still have no idea how the boy wound up wandering, uninjured, near Dunnellon Road and Citrus Avenue about 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
"The boy's story about how he got there contained so many inconsistencies that deputies were unclear about exactly what may have happened," a Citrus County Sheriff's Office news release states. "However, after working throughout the night and all day today, the answers remain unknown."
Deputies are continuing to investigate. They are checking on the registered sexual offenders in the area, but so far have turned up nothing unusual, deputies say.
"Officers also are continuing their neighborhood canvassing, plus their questioning of teachers, classmates and school officials, plus family and friends of the youngster, in an effort to develop more leads in this baffling case," the release states.
Those who saw anything suspicious in the area of Dunnellon Road and Citrus Avenue late Thursday should call 911 or (352) 726-1121.
