A shooting suspect fired shots at police, carjacked people in an attempt to flee and fatally shot himself Friday, Lakeland police say.
His name has not been released by law enforcement.
The incident began about 5:46 p.m. today, when one person was shot and another was pistol-whipped in a robbery at 1510 Kathleen Road in Lakeland.
Witnesses told investigators the suspect left the scene in a Ford sedan.
Officers say they saw the sedan at that it tried to flee before crashing into a pole at 400 S. Lake Ave. The suspect then carjacked people in a Nissan Maxima at 811 E. Palmetto St. Those victims weren't hurt.
Officers spotted the Maxima near Rushing Avenue and McDonald Street. Police followed it to County Line Road and Shepherd Road, and they were able to disable the car about 6:14 p.m.
"The suspect died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound," a Lakeland Police Department news release states. "One officer received minor injuries during the course of this incident, and was treated and released from Lakeland Regional Medical Center. No shots were fired during this event by Lakeland Police Officers."
An investigation is ongoing, and no further information would be released Friday night, police said.
