TAMPA - Former Gov. Bob Martinez of Tampa has been named a "Great Floridian" as part of a program that seeks to recognize people who have made major contributions to the state.
Martinez, 74, who began his work life as a teacher and restaurateur, was governor of Florida from 1987 to 1991.
Those honored by the Great Floridian program - at least two people a year - are nominated by a group of elected state officials and chosen by the secretary of state.
In a letter to the former governor, Secretary of State Kurt Browning said Martinez was chosen for achievement "in the area of environmental land acquisition and surface water improvement.
"In addition, your determination to eliminate wasteful spending and efforts to promote the state's drug control programs exemplify how one person can make a value-added difference," Browning wrote.
Other nominees for this year will be announced at the ceremony next week.
