TAMPA - Match Day, when graduating medical students find out where they will spend their residencies, always brings surprises and tears of joy.
University of South Florida students gathered at Skipper's Smokehouse on Thursday for the annual tradition. Each student takes a turn in front of the microphone, opening an envelope containing the name of the hospital where he or she will begin training.
The occasion turned out to be especially intense for one USF student today: Her boyfriend slipped a marriage proposal into her envelope.
"Oh my God. ... 'Will you marry me?'" a beaming Julie Contes read, to the cheers and squeals of classmates.
Her boyfriend, Johnny Gibbs, stepped up from the crowd with a ring and got down on one knee.
Contes responded with an ecstatic "yes" and went on to open a second letter - the one saying she will do her residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
