Published: March 20, 2009

Does this affect property owners outside Tampa?

No, although there are some properties outside the city hooked up to the city's water system. Look at your water bill or call the city's water department at (813) 274-8121 to find out if you are on the system.

Can I use my irrigation system if I use reclaimed water?

Yes. Customers who use reclaimed water are not affected by the new restrictions.

Can I still sign up for the reclaimed water program?

Yes. The rate for reclaimed water is $1.20 for each unit of water (748 gallons). For information, contact a reclaimed water service representative at (813) 282-7827. However, the system is only available to South Tampa residents, and if you didn't sign up for the program, you will have to pay a $350 hook-up fee for a meter.

What are the rules governing hand-watering of lawns?

Hand-watering with a hose will be allowed, but only one day a week between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. For addresses ending in even numbers (or the letters A through M) that day is Tuesday. For addresses ending in odd numbers (or letters N through Z) that day is Sunday.

Can I use a sprinkler that can be attached to the end of a hose?

No. Those are banned under the new rules.

When can I water my shrubbery and flowering plants?

Irrigation for nonturf landscaping by hand-watering or with soaker hoses is not limited to once a week and is allowed on any day between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Can I wash my car in my driveway?

Yes, but you need to have an automatic shut-off device on the hose.

Can I water new sod and new landscaping?

Yes. Hand-watering or micro-irrigation of new sod and new landscaping is allowed any day between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. for the 30 days after the new sod and landscaping is in place. After that, the new rules apply.

Can you explain watering by micro-irrigation?

That is watering with what are called soaker hoses that severely restrict the flow of water through pinhole openings in the hose.

What is the fine for breaking the rules?

Fines range from $100 to $450 and can result in a court appearance.

How do I report people who don't follow the rules?

Water-use violations may be reported by calling the city's 24-hour hot line at (813) 274-8036 and leaving a detailed message.

Where can I get more information?

Expect a notice by mail explaining the changes. Call (813) 274-8121 or visit the city's Web site: www.tampagov.net/WaterRestrictions.
