A canine unit for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office has arrested an armed suspect who also was a South Carolina fugitive, deputies say.
Deputies charged Charles Antuan McCants, 27, with being a felon in possession of firearm, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and being in possession of crack cocaine. He also had warrants out in South Carolina for kidnapping, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during a felony.
About 2:15 a.m. today at the One More Time Bar, 10710 Walsingham Road in Largo, deputies responded to a report of an armed man. When they arrived, McCants tried leaving the scene in a vehicle and wound up crashing into another vehicle on the bar's lot, deputies say.
McCants, who has no known home address, jumped out of the vehicle while it was still moving, deputies say.
Deputies chased him.
Deputy Jacob Viano and police dog Valor tracked McCants to Deerwood Gardens Apartments, 11511 113th St., a sheriff's office news release states. McCants was found running near a wooded area.
"The suspect was challenged to stop, the suspect did not comply and Valor was released to apprehend the suspect," according to the release. "Valor was successful and the suspect was taken into custody, sustaining minor punctures and scratches."
Deputies found a firearm and ammunition in McCants' vehicle and money and ammunition on McCants, deputies say.
