Politics As Usual
What a shame that the very fine sports community in Tampa/Hillsborough County cannot have a coexistence between city and county appointees. It would not surprise me if an investigation revealed a violation of the Florida Sunshine Law by certain members of the Tampa Sports Authority when deciding the future of Henry Saavedra, who was forced to resign as executive director.
Maybe that law should be the next to go. It has probably been disregarded one way or another by all levels that are supposed to live by it.
Tampa Bay politics at its finest - as usual.

'Newfound Austerity'
Regarding "Long Delay In Tanker Deal Will Hurt Nation's Security" (Our Opinion, March 17):
What gives your editorial writer the notion that the White House is seeking to "cut expenses" and "curtail spending"? I have seen nothing but gigantic spending bills coming out of the White House and Congress in the past few months.
Apparently, the administration's newfound austerity program only affects the Pentagon. I've got to believe the much-needed tanker project would create thousands of high-paying jobs across the country.

Quiet, Please
Can anyone justify the use of leaf blowers in downtown Tampa? They kick up dust and grit while creating noise and pollution. Doesn't exactly add to the enjoyment of walking around the city.
The other day there were two workers, side by side, each with blowers, blasting away on a sidewalk along Franklin Street. Isn't it bad enough that Tampa is one of the most dangerous places for pedestrians? Or does it aspire to be one of the most obnoxious places to walk also?
Leaf blowers have no business in a downtown setting. It can be kept clean with brooms - without the dust, noise or pollution.

Recall Caetano
Regarding "Councilman's Condo In Jeopardy" (Metro, March 19):
How is it this "businessman," Joseph Caetano, is still allowed to represent us on Tampa City Council? It appears to me he either cannot or will not run his own financial affairs in a fiscally responsible manner. Why should I trust him to make fiscally responsible choices on my behalf for the city and with my tax money?
Can we have a recall on this buffoon?

What Is The Point?
I'm having difficulty determining the real value of the World Baseball Classic, particularly to Major League clubs that have big-money players involved. Most of the participating teams are fielding a majority of American League and National League talent. How is this reflective of the native talent that exists today in each country outside the United States?
Also, it is baffling that clubs would risk injury to their star players for games that could very well be played after the regular season.
Is there something more to this seemingly senseless exhibition other than national bragging rights?
