Area Snook Bite On Fire

Published: March 21, 2009

GO FISHING is a look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Mike Anderson, right, with "Reel Animals" partner Billy Nobles.

A steady dose of 80-degree weather has put Bay area snook on the prowl for food. Our trips this week were pretty easy to pull off. Find a pass, dock or bay with good tidal flow and it was game on.

The bait of choice was definitely greenbacks either floated under a cork or free-lined into the target area.

We caught anywhere from 20 to 40 fish per day with almost every day producing a couple of nice slot fish.

We also managed to have a very good week of big speckled trout fishing. Again greenbacks seemed to be the preferred bait as they are showing up in great numbers all over the Bay area.

We caught most of the bigger 20-inch plus fish in fairly shallow water floating the baits under corks. Most were in 3 feet or less of water.

The trout bite also seemed to be strongest in the morning before the sun got too high. Our clients did manage to catch a couple of nice redfish as well, but they were really just a byproduct this week as it was hard not to fish for snook with the bite this good.

If you are without a boat or kayak do not fret. People fishing off the Skyway fishing piers were catching Spanish mackerel every cast Wednesday morning.

As the bait pours into the Bay area, the Spanish mackerel will follow and make great action for the whole family.

Catch Billy Nobles and Mike Anderson on the "Reel Animals Fishing Show" on Saturdays from 6:30-7 a.m. and Sundays from 11-11:30 a.m. on WFLA, Channel 8, and on Sundays from 8-10 a.m. on 1040 AM.
