WESLEY CHAPEL - Kamran Joyer believes records are meant to be broken.
So, on Wednesday he did just that.
The Wesley Chapel High heavyweight had a 440-pound bench press and a 315-pound clean and jerk to set school, family and personal records during the East Side Tournament at Sunlake High School. The 755-pound total breaks the record by 30 pounds.
The 30-pound improvement in one week is amazing.
Joyer, who has a full athletic scholarship to the University of South Florida, broke school and family records just the week before at Wesley Chapel. He had 425 pounds on the bench and 300 pounds in the clean and jerk.
Joyer was hard pressed to explain his dramatic improvement.
"Last week, I didn't give it all," Joyer said. "It's just hard work."
Joyer was ninth in the state last year in the heavyweight class.
"He's an animal," said Wesley Chapel assistant coach Able Robinson. "He works hard. Last year, little bro Hunter, second in the state showed him up a little bit. He is getting ready for the football season coming up at USF. He just felt he had to get stronger and has been working hard."
McMillan Takes Weight Class
It was the day after St. Patrick's Day but Ryan McMillan figured he had a little leftover Irish luck.
The Sunlake High 129-pounder won his class for the first time at the East Side Tournament. He had a 205-pound bench press and a 150-pound clean and jerk for a 355-pound total.
"I feel really lucky," said the junior. "I did a lot better than I thought I was going to do. My previous best was a 335-pound total."
McMillan said he is in his first year on the weightlifting team but he began lifting during his sophomore year.
"Coach Matt Smith is a really great coach," McMillan said. "He has helped me with power clean a lot."
"He has been improving on his bench," Smith said. "We really have been working on his clean and jerk. One-hundred fifty on the clean and jerk is a personal record. I'm happy for him."
LOL's Northcutt Equal To Task
Land O' Lakes High's Daniel Northcutt did an unusual thing at the East Side Tournament.
He lifted 230 pounds in both the bench press and clean and jerk for a 460-pound total. He finished fourth in his 183-pound class.
"My clean and jerk is actually right there with my bench," Northcutt said. "I play defensive tackle.
"It gives me a time to be me and nobody else. I manage to stay motivated by family members mostly. My personal best is 260 pounds on the bench press."
Northcutt plans to join the Army National Guard and eventually become a policeman.
Pasco Prevails At East Side
Pasco High won the event with 76 points. Sunlake High, the host, was second with 52 points.
Pasco coach David Gaffney said he expected his team to win the meet.
"We had gone against most of them," Gaffney said. "We kind of expected to win. There were not really any surprises. They did what I thought they would do. They have gotten stronger every week."
