As construction continues to shrink, Pasco County building officials are considering closing three offices that process permits.
The most likely candidate for closing is the Land O' Lakes office, which operates from the county-owned Central Pasco Government Center at U.S. 41 and Bell Lake Road. That office's staff and operations would be consolidated with operations in Dade City.
"That's an option that we're considering," said Development Review director Cindy Jolly, who oversees the county's permitting staff. "Nothing's been decided."
Between January 2007 and January 2009, the Land O' Lakes and Dade City offices together handled slightly more than 22,000 building permits. That's about 60 percent of the traffic of the New Port Richey office, Jolly said recently in a report to County Administrator John Gallagher.
Combining the Land O' Lakes and Dade City offices would save money at a time when the county faces a $30 million deficit for next year. It also would put the permitting operations in the same building as the clerk of the court and property appraiser, simplifying paperwork, Jolly said.
