TAMPA - Freshman guard Jasmine Wynne scored a career-high 26 points to lead the University of South Florida to an 88-81 overtime win against Florida Gulf Coast in a WNIT second-round game Saturday at the Sun Dome.
"She's going to be the future of our basketball program in the backcourt," Bulls coach Jose Fernandez said of Wynne. "She was having such a good game Saturday that down the stretch we put the ball in her hands."
Wynne said she fed off her teammates' belief in her.
"I think that my teammates had a lot of confidence in me," Wynne said, "so that helped build mine."
Center Jessica Lawson and forward Brittany Denson, who both finished with double-doubles, helped USF hold big advantages in rebounds (46-26), points in the paint (56-24) and second-chance points (23-6).
Lawson finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds, and Denson had 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Gulf Coast (26-5) led by 12 late in the first half, but USF used a 19-5 run in the second half to get back in the game.
USF (23-10) will host the winner of today's Mississippi-Murray State game this week.
The 23 wins for the Bulls are the most - men's or women's - in school history.
