TAMPA - Hours after a private construction crew ruptured a 6-inch line, a natural gas leak at Tampa Bay Boulevard and Lois Avenue is under control, Tampa Fire Rescue says.
No one was injured. Repairs are being completed. Evacuations have been canceled, and the streets have reopened.
Hawks Landing apartments, 4010 N. Lois Ave., was evacuated for several hours today. About 30 children and staff members were sheltered in place at Hillsborough County College's day care.
Tampa Electric Co. gas crews on the scene, needed to reduce pressure in the gas line. The crews were able to control the leak about 11:45 a.m., roughly 2 1/2 hours after Tampa Fire Rescue initially responded to the scene.
"The construction crew working for A&L Underground Inc. was installing a water line and possibly made contact with the gas line with a backhoe resulting in the gas leak," a Tampa Fire Rescue news release states.
