TAMPA - A Jeff Lacy-Roy Jones Jr. matchup could be in the works for this June.
Jones (53-5, 39 KOs) is fresh from a fifth-round technical knockout of Omar Sheika, Friday night in Pensacola. The victory gave Jones the vacant NABO light heavyweight belt.
It was Jones' first KO of an opponent since his TKO victory against Clinton Woods in 2002 and his first win following November's loss to Joe Calzaghe at Madison Square Garden.
Shortly after the victory, Jones told boxingtalk.com he would have no problem taking on Lacy in June "… if nobody else big step up…"
"He's a good fighter and a strong puncher and that's why he wants to fight me because he's a puncher," Jones told boxingtalk.com. "He thinks he has a chance because he could punch, I know he's a good fighter, but at the same time, I'm still Roy Jones Jr., so you know what that means don't you?"
Jones, of Pensacola, said he would move down to 168 pounds from 175 to make the fight happen.
"Let's do it," Lacy said Monday. "He'll probably be here sitting in the audience of my fight and after my fight is over with, we can do it. We can make the plans. Roy Jones, let's do it."
Lacy (24-2, 17 KOs) is in the midst of preparing for his April 10 fight against Sacramento's Otis Griffin, which will be held at the USF Sun Dome. April's bout will be Lacy's first fight since his unanimous decision loss in November to Jermain Taylor in a WBC super middleweight title eliminator.
Griffin (19-4-2, 7 KOs) last fought Nov. 11, when he suffered a third-round technical knockout to Enad Licina in Germany.
According to Lacy, he believes the fight with Jones Jr. could take place here in Tampa.
