TALLAHASSEE - Urging Floridians to help the state economy by shopping locally, Gov. Charlie Crist today unveiled the Florida Backyard Card discount Web site.
Users can go to www.FloridaBackyardCard.com, put in their Zip code, and find discounts in their area on everything from retailers to restaurants to motels on the beach. The card can be printed out from the Web site and used to get discounts offered on the site. The cards are also available at all Florida Lottery sites.
Crist, surrounded by business leaders, said one of the best ways to fight the economic downturn is to spend money in the state. He sidestepped a question about whether Internet sales should be taxed so they won't have an unfair advantage over in-state retailers.
"Hundreds of businesses across Florida are offering incentives with Florida Backyard Cards," Crist said. "This is a way to help our fellow Floridians in a time of need."
Billboard companies, radio and cable television stations are donating advertising space and time to promote the program.
