The headline on the front-page article by Russell Ray on March 22 announced "A Smart Approach To Saving Energy." The article explained that you could track your electricity use with the touch of a button using "smart grid" technology. Sounds good so far, but read on.
A smart meter allows the power company to monitor your power usage in real time, and a smart switch "allows the utility to cycle power on and off to the air conditioner" as well as water heaters and home appliances, according to the article. I, for one, would be upset to come home after work and find my house at 90 degrees or that Progress Energy had defrosted my refrigerator. This is Orwellian in the extreme.
Florida needs to come up with a real energy plan that generates more energy, not a plan that leaves us sweating in the dark.
