An incident that led to a man being fatally shot by two Polk County sheriff's deputies began following an unreported burglary, deputies say.
At 1:41 a.m. Sunday, deputies came to 128 Idaho Ave. for a reported shooting. They determined two people had fought and exchanged gunfire, leaving the scene before deputies came.
Witnesses told deputies that Carlos Raul Torres-Ramos, 38, had arrived at the home hoping to take revenge on a 16-year-old boy he believed had burglarized his home. He believed the boy, Jose Antonio Negron, stole $4,000, a watch and a firearm March 16, witnesses said to deputies.
Torres-Ramos had not reported the break-in to police.
Deputies say Negron was shot in the leg during Sunday's fight and was taken by family to 118 Edgewater Drive in Winter Haven.
Torres-Ramos, meanwhile, left the scene in a 1999 white Mitsubishi Eclipse, which was later found at 1341 Penny Royal Court in Lakeland. There, Torres-Ramos pointed his 9-mm pistol at deputies, a Polk County Sheriff's Office news release states.
The deputies fired eight to 12 rounds at him.
After the gunfire, Torres-Ramos went back in the apartment from where deputies had earlier removed a woman and three children ranging from 9 to 13 years old. A SWAT team entered the apartment and found Ramos dead, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said.
Negron was charged with burglary of a dwelling, grand theft of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a minor. He is in the Juvenile Assessment Center.
Investigators say they determined a 15-year-old girl also took part in the burglary. She was charged with burglary and grand theft of a firearm and was booked into the Juvenile Assessment Center on Sunday evening.
Negron's sister, 21-year-old Jessica Negron, and her husband, 23-year-old Samuel Rivera, also were arrested. Each was charged with grand theft, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of a firearm by a minor with knowledge.
