A man in his 40s and a 15-year-old boy were injured this afternoon when the personal watercraft they were trying to get on, off the shore of Sand Key, exploded, according to fire and police officials.
The explosion occurred at 2:22 p.m. in the Gulf of Mexico right behind the Sheraton Sand Key hotel, said Marvin Pettingill, assistant chief for Clearwater Fire Rescue.
The man was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, while the teenager was transported to Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Pettingill said. The older victim was taken to St. Joseph's because of the nature of his complaints, but Pettingill described the injuries to both people as minor.
The two were trying to get on the personal watercraft when it exploded, said Elizabeth Watts, Clearwater's public safety spokeswoman.
