Friday Extra Concert Series Kicks Off This Week

TAMPA - Jazz, folk rock, pop and even classical music will be part of the Friday Extra Concert Series that kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday at Lowry Park.

Hundreds are expected to attend these free concerts held on Fridays through May 22. All concerts are free to the public and are held at the Lowry Park Band Shell, at 7525 North Boulevard. (There will no concert on April 10 in observance of Good Friday).

This year's talent includes 14 local bands as well as the Florida Orchestra.

The opening act this week is the jazz quartet Stolen Idols, who play authentic tropical mood-music pioneered by Martin Denny and Les Baxter.

Taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. is the Grammy-nominated Dan McMillian Jazz Orchestra.

The Friday Extra Concert Series is produced by the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department.

Event sponsors include The Tampa Tribune, Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union, Arts Council of Hillsborough County, Friends of Tampa Recreation, Inc., Q105 WRBQ-FM, and Target Stores Family Grants.

April 3: Caje (Caribbean Arts Jazz) and Legends of Rock

April 17: Stephanie Carpenter (Folk Rock) and Rebekah Pulley & The Reluctant Prophets (Folk Rock)

April 24: Maggie Council (Folk Blues) and Kraig Kenning (Blues)

May 1: Hammerhead Steel Drums and Somos Musica (Latin)

May 8: The Florida Orchestra (Classical)

May 15: Steve Vaelavik (Folk Rock) and Vodkanauts (Power Lounge)

May 22: Brent Rademaker (Folk Pop) and Late Night Brass

All concerts are replayed on City of Tampa Television, Channel 15 on Verizon Fios and Channel 615 on
Bright House Networks on Mondays at 8 a.m., Wednesdays at 1 p.m., and Fridays at 6 p.m. during the week following each concert date.
