With a lengthy to-do list awaiting him, Richard Gehring won approval Tuesday to be Pasco County's growth management director, replacing Sam Steffey, who is retiring after 30 years.
Gehring, a veteran of planning and public service in the Tampa Bay area, started the job the minute county commissioners approved his employment. He'll make $100,000 a year.
"I think he has the experience and the knowledge to help us forge through the challenges we have before us," County Administrator John Gallagher said.
Gehring will work with Steffey for the next month to get up to speed on the various projects the county has under way to revise its long-range plan, update its land development code and streamline its staff.
Steffey will retire April 30.
A resident of Dunedin, Gehring was that Pinellas County community's planning director and was its manager from 1974 through 1981.
He since has worked for private planning and engineering firms in the Tampa Bay region. Most recently, he ran his own company, Prime Interests, from 1988 through 2008. That corporation now is inactive.
Gehring has a master's degree in urban planning from the University of Virginia School of Architecture.
