Town 'N Country Sewer Line Spills For 3rd Time

TAMPA - For a third time, Town 'N Country residents are being asked to avoid Sweetwater Creek because of a sewage spill.

A 20-inch sewage line broke Wednesday morning along Comanche Avenue, just east of Hanley Avenue. The break was discovered about 10:45 a.m. by staff at a nearby day care center. The flow from the line was stopped at 12:45 p.m.

Water Resource officials said they won't know how much sewage flowed into nearby Sweetwater Creek until tests are completed today.

This is the third time a rupture has occurred along the segment of line. The other breaks happened in September and October, which then prompted an investigation by Hillsborough County Water Resource Services.

County commissioners awarded a construction contract last week to repair the troubled segment, which should begin in a few weeks.

In the meantime, residents along the creek, which flows south to the Courtney Campbell Parkway area, are urged not to have any contact with the water in the creek or the area where it flows into Old Tampa Bay. Water Resource Services has notified local and state environmental agencies, posted signs, and will be taking samples and monitoring the area where the spill occurred.

The contractor that installed the 9-month-old pipeline was on-site to make the repairs, which were expected to be finished Wednesday night.
