A Pinellas County deputy answering a complaint about puppies digging under a neighbor's fence was bitten by the dog's mother Wednesday evening.
Deputy Brett Savage was able to drive himself to the hospital after being treated at the scene, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.
He was bitten when deputies answered a complaint that pitbull puppies were digging under a fence at 1659 Florida Avenue in Palm Harbor and getting into a yard next door just before 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Darryl Luyat, who was caring for the four puppies and their 2-year-old mother named Mamma-Dog, had retrieved the puppies by the time deputies arrived.
While talking to Luyat inside the house, Savage asked to see the mother. The dog attacked Savage when Luyat opened a door to the bedroom where the dog was being kept, the sheriff's office said.
Luyat was able to restrain Mamma-Dog and the deputies left the house, the sheriff's office said.
The dogs' owner, Samuel Tressler, 22, of St. Petersburg, was not there when the attack occurred.
