Top Student Athletes Honored

Hillsborough County administrators honored the top winter sports student athletes in a ceremony at the county school board building Thursday morning.

Bloomingdale senior Callum Townsend received the Alston "Mac" McGahagin Boys Basketball Award. Townsend, who signed with the University of Tampa, ended his career as the Bulls all-time leading scorer with 1,556 points and also accumulated a 3.86 GPA this year.

Academy of the Holy Names senior Katie Davis was honored with the Dottie McGahagin Girls Basketball Award. Davis, who signed with the University of Pennsylvania, has led the county in scoring the past two seasons.

Brandon senior Eric Grajales was named the Tom Wells Outstanding Wrestler of the Year. Grajales, who signed with Michigan, was 219-0 during his four years at Brandon with four state championships. He also carries a 4.88 GPA.

Durant senior Tarin Moses received the Williamson-Sapp Outstanding Cheerleader Award. Moses, who will attend Florida, was a captain on the Durant team this year and also has a 5.72 GPA.

Brandon coach Russ Cozart was named the Joel Medgebow Coach of the Year. Medgebow was a former University of Tampa wrestler and Robinson coach who was killed in 1974. Members of Medgebow's family presented the award to Cozart, who recently guided the Eagles to their 20th team state title.

Also recognized were the top academic teams in each winter sport. Newsome was honored for girls basketball with an overall unweighted GPA of 3.557. Plant earned the boys basketball award with a 3.320 GPA. The Plant girls soccer team won for the second year in a row with a 3.792. Chamberlain's wrestling team also earned it's second consecutive academic award with a 3.083 GPA. King's boys soccer team had the highest GPA with a 3.399 and Newsome won it's second academic award, this time for cheerleading with a 3.480 GPA.
