The NCAA Tournament was going according to plan Thursday night as No. 1 seeds Pittsburgh and Connecticut advanced to the region finals. Then Missouri and Villanova shook things up.
Missouri, the West Region's No. 3 seed, beat second-seeded Memphis 102-91 in Glendale, Ariz., as J.T. Tiller's career-high 23 points helped end the Tigers' winning streak at 27.
Moments later, in a similar scenario in the East Region, third-seeded Villanova finished off a 77-54 pounding of second-seeded Duke in Boston. Villanova's first win against Duke in 50 years was led by Dante Cunningham's 14 points and 11 rebounds.
UConn opened the night's action by defeating fifth-seeded Purdue 72-60 in Glendale. Hasheem Thabeet scored 15 points and had 15 rebounds as the Huskies overcame a sluggish first half and reached the region finals for the fourth time since 2002.
Pittsburgh advanced to the region finals for the first time in 35 years with a 60-55 win against fourth-seeded Xavier in Boston. Levance Fields hit a key 3-pointer with 50.9 seconds left, then scored off his steal.
