The University of Florida will partner with Lockheed Martin to develop and launch five miniature satellites called CubeSats to test a range of space technology innovations.
The satellites built in the shape of a cube measure less than 4 inches on each side. They weigh less than 1 kilogram, or 2.2 pounds, and operate on power similar to what a cell phone uses.
CubeSats can be built and launched inexpensively within months, compared with sophisticated satellites that weigh thousands of pounds and cost millions of dollars to develop and launch, Lockheed Martin said in a statement.
Lockheed Martin will fund $450,000 in research at UF this year. The satellites will be launched within 18 months; the launch site has not been determined.
