GO FISHING is a look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.
Snook fishing is still going hot and heavy. On my charters this week, despite the wind, we scored with double-digit snook fishing mostly on half-days. A few redfish were mixed in. Trout were mostly in the open areas that were pretty much unfishable because of the high winds.
The trick was finding areas out of the wind that were comfortable to fish and catching white bait. White bait can be caught at the Howard Frankland Bridge or the range markers leading to the Sunshine Skyway.
Captain Danny Guarino led the "Hooked on Fishing" film crew to a great day of snook fishing in the Bishop Harbor area. Using white bait found at the Skyway, we caught an unusually high percentage of big snook. More than half the snook were in the slot, and a few were over.
Anglers fishing Potter Pier at Fort DeSoto have been scoring with Spanish mackerel throwing silver spoons and Gotcha plugs. Sunrise is the best time. After daylight the porpoises move in and steal the mackerel off the fishermen's line, making it almost unfishable.
Mastry's Bait and Tackle reports a few kingfish at the Betty Rose and the Blind Pass Drop. The main kingfish school was reported off Naples this week. It won't be long before they are here. I will be focusing my charter fishing on the smoker kings as soon as they get here.
