TAMPA - Frank Permuy joked Friday night that if you stay in coaching long enough, you're bound to reach some milestones. Fortunately for Gaither's longtime baseball coach, he didn't have to wait long with his latest milestone within reach.
In his first attempt to earn career win No. 500, Permuy's Cowboys came through, slugging their way past Sickles 10-4 on Friday to put the only coach in Gaither program history into an elite club.
Permuy (500-270) became just the third baseball coach in Hillsborough County history to amass 500 wins, joining former Jesuit coach John Crumbley (575 wins) and longtime Jefferson coach Pop Cuesta (538).
"It is special, there's no doubt about it," Permuy said. "That's pretty good company."
Gaither's offense also was pretty good against the Gryphons (6-7). The Cowboys (9-4) had 11 hits, including home runs from Drew Doty, Brady North and Mike Danner.
Doty and North hit back-to-back solo homers in the first to help the Cowboys erase an early two-run deficit, and Danner's two-run shot to center in the fifth capped a streak of 10 consecutive Gaither runs.
"Everyone was just hitting the ball tonight," said Danner, who finished 3-for-4. "Eleven hits is a lot, including getting three home runs. You can't ask for anything else."
