Published: March 29, 2009

WESLEY CHAPEL - Mike Centanni was one of several lifters who had reason to breathe a sigh of relief Wednesday.

The Gulf lifter finished third in the 139-pound weight class to earn a berth at the sectional qualifying meet, scheduled for April 8 at Hudson. Centanni had a bench press of 235 pounds and a 190-pound clean and jerk to finish with a 425-pound total.

Zephyrhills' Chad Reubens won the class with a 255-pound bench and a 185-pound clean and jerk.
Centanni was one of 37 Pasco County lifters to reach the sectional qualifier.

However, the senior was disappointed with his effort.

"I got a slow press, and I didn't get the weight I wanted," Centanni said.
Centanni was ninth at state last season, but he moved up a weight class.

"I consider it an accomplishment to qualify for state," he said.

His coach was happy that Centanni qualified.

"He's going to the sectionals, and he is going to do well," said Gulf coach Steve Franks.

ROBBINS TO SECTIONALS: John Robbins has a shot at lifting at the state meet. The Wiregrass Ranch lifter was second in the 154-pound class. Robbins had a 280-pound bench press and a 215-pound clean and jerk.

Pasco High's Jamall Haynes won the class with a 525-pound total. Haynes had a 305-pound bench and a 220-pound clean and jerk.

"This is my first year of weightlifting," said Robins, a senior. "I wish I lifted last year. If I had done it earlier, I think I could have won state this year.

"This qualifying would be a big accomplishment. I started out lifting 260 pounds in the bench. I am happy to have this opportunity to do weightlifting."

Robbins plans to attend the University of West Virginia.

"He's a quiet kid," said Wiregrass coach Chris Bounell. "He leads by example. He is very well-liked, very popular. He is very consistent. He's a good kid to coach."

PASCO QUALIFIES 10: Pasco High is sending the most weightlifters to the sectional qualifying meet at Hudson with 10. Sunlake and Hudson each qualified nine lifters, while Wiregrass and Zephyrhills each are sending four and Gulf will send one.

Qualifiers from the Hudson sectional will compete at the State Boys Weightlifting Meet on April 25 at River Ridge. Wesley Chapel, Mitchell and River Ridge will go to the Belleview sectional April 8 in order to qualify for the state meet.
