A Citrus County sheriff's dog is back home with its handler and recovering after being stabbed in the line of duty March 23.
Mito, a 5-year-old German shepherd, and Deputy Jim Davis responded to reports of a man jumping in and out traffic in Crystal River. Dominic Giacobbe, 26, brandished a large knife when Davis and other deputies confronted him, the sheriff's office said.
Davis released Mito to apprehend Giacobbe, who then stabbed the dog. The wound came within a half-inch of Mito's heart, veterinarians said.
Giacobbe refused to drop his weapon and charged deputies, the sheriff's office said. Deputy Todd Cridland fired the shot that killed Giacobbe.
No one else was injured.
