Jury selection for the man accused killing a woman in a Brandon nightclub got underway today.
Tyrone Grimes, 28, is accused of firing the fatal shot that killed 36-year-old Karen Williams.
The mother of three was an innocent bystander in Club Fluid when a fight broke out.
Hillsborough County sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said that on Oct. 17, 2007, Grimes fired a handgun several times inside Fluid after an argument
Grimes' defense attorney said his client is innocent.
"There's going to be eyewitnesses that will say my guy never had the gun," said defense attorney Ron Kurpiers. "There was a gun pulled. There was a struggle for the gun. My guy was trying to save himself and the gun went off and unfortunately, tragically, this woman was killed."
Williams' mother Carolyn Taylor said the family is trying to focus on seeing justice done.
"We have decided to keep our emotions under control because one thing we do know, whatever we do…will not bring Karen back," said Taylor. "But we do want to see justice done."
Opening statements are slated to begin tomorrow for a trial that should last until the end of the week.
