TAMPA - A Tampa man trying to steal money from a South Tampa Hess station backed away from the store after an employee took out an Asp tactical baton and expanded it Sunday morning, Tampa police say.
Officers arrested 33-year-old Michael Lee Jones at 7:01 a.m. Sunday. He was charged with robbery, possession of a controlled substance and introduction of contraband into a detention facility.
About 6:55 a.m. Sunday, Jones walked up to the store counter at 5602 S. Dale Mabry Highway, police say. He had a shirt over his face, and the shirt had two eye holes cut out.
Store employees told him to uncover his face, and he demanded money, police say. When he started reaching for his back pocket, a store employee withdrew the baton.
Jones remained in Orient Road Jail today. His bail was set at $17,000.
