A Tampa man pulled over for driving with a suspended license struggled with a Hillsborough County deputy and tried pulling a gun from the deputy's holster Sunday night, deputies say.
About 7:20 p.m. Sunday, during a traffic stop near Bearss Avenue and Pinecrest Road, 31-year-old Paul Hall refused to stop for more than a block "in an effort to flee into his neighborhood," an arrest report states. The deputy knew before the stop that Hall was driving with a suspended license.
As the deputy tried arresting Hall, he pushed violently backward, causing himself and the deputy to fall, according to the report. Hall then struck the deputy's face and removed the deputy's radio, tossing it away from the deputy.
Hall grabbed the deputy's gun and tried pulling it from the holster, the report states. The deputy was able to protect the weapon.
Deputies eventually were able to arrest Hall.
Charges against him include battery on a law enforcement officer, obstructing or opposing an officer with violence, depriving an officer of a means of protection and driving with a suspended, canceled or revoked license.
Hall remained in Orient Road Jail today. His bail was set at $40,000.
Hall previously was arrested Friday for driving without a valid license. He was released from jail Saturday morning.
