A man killed by a train Tuesday afternoon in Auburndale may have been listening to an MP3 player when he was struck, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
Willer Dorleus, 21, of Kelly Lane in Auburndale, was walking east on train tracks running along Derby Avenue about 4:30 p.m., sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood said. A CSX train was also going east on the tracks.
Deputies say the train conductor sounded the horn to alert Dorleus, but the man didn't respond.
Deputies found an MP3 player at the scene of the crash, which may mean Dorleus was listening to it as he walked and didn't hear the train's horn, Wood said.
CSX officials responded to the crash, which shut down Recker Highway for several hours. The investigation is ongoing.
