RIVERVIEW - More than 1,000 people are expected to converge on the Independent International Showmen's Association's club to take part in a favorite South Shore tradition.

The Greater River Chamber of Commerce announced Monday it will host its ninth annual Hog Roast & Silent Auction on April 18.

This will be the second year the showmen's association hosts the event, set from 5 to 10 p.m. at 6915 Riverview Drive.

"Almost 1,000 people attended last year, after we moved the hog roast from Plant City to the showmen's site," said Tanya Doran, the chamber's executive director. "We're hoping for 1,200 this year."

Doran said joining the roast is a great way for families to enjoy an evening together for a reasonable price. Admission includes an all-you-can-eat-and-drink barbecue dinner catered by Lupton's Fat Man's BBQ & Country Cooking and live entertainment by Bill "Elvis" Lindsey, Doran said.

YMCA Camp Christina staff members will oversee an expanded children's area, which means there will be lots more activities for kids of all ages.

Tickets are available at the Riverview chamber for $20; free for ages 12 and younger when accompanied by a paying adult.

Proceeds from the roast and silent auction will be split between the chamber and Shriners Hospitals for Children. Last year, the hog roast raised $7,000 for the Tampa nonprofit organization.
