DUNEDIN - In the history of sports, there have been plenty of father-son duos.
Bill and Luke Walton of basketball, Bobby and Barry Bonds of baseball, and Archie and Peyton or Eli Manning of football are just a few of the many examples.
But of all the duos, very few, if any, compete at the level that David and Lex Carr reached at the first Dunedin Beard Competition.
Dozens of competitors entered the Dunedin Brewery looking to be named the baddest, the bushiest and the beardiest. Although 19-year-old Lex sported a curled handlebar mustache and sparse mutton chops, his 41-year-old father, David, was identified as the beard of the ball with his locks of deep mahogany and amber, peppered with strands of ashy grays beneath a well-kept mustache.
"I derive a lot inspiration from my dad," Lex said. "He's got good genes, so I am hoping to get a beard that is half as good one day."
David's beard was good enough for gold, or in this competition, a wooden first-place medallion. Although David is glad that his year's worth of growth paid off, he is also glad to do it for a good cause.
The event was organized by Beardsman, a locally run organization that acted as a fundraiser for the National Health Care for the Homeless Council. At the inaugural event, Beardsman raised $1,577 through entry fees, drawing tickets and merchandise sales. The money will support care for homeless people with mental illness.
