PLANT CITY - Concerned about the possible closing of the downtown post office, resident June Ambrose had a suggestion for cIty commissioners: Make some City Hall space available for a satellite post office.
Commissioners had no immediate reaction to her suggestion at their March 23 meeting.
A downtown fixture since 1935, the post office at 302 W. Reynolds St., across from City Hall, might be closed under U.S. Postal Service cutbacks under consideration. The commission learned of that possibility Feb. 23.
No decision has been reached on the closing under consideration as part of a planned consolidation of facilities to cut costs. Should it happen, however, the agency would open a full-service "contract postal unit" within an existing business, close to downtown, said Tampa-based Postal Service spokesman Gary Sawtelle.
If the independent federal agency opts to close the post office, the property will be offered for sale. The city was approached about buying the building or the adjacent parking lot west of Thomas Street but has expressed little interest.
