TAMPA - A car thief got away this afternoon with what turned out to be anything but an ordinary vehicle.
The man stole from a car dealership what turned out to be an unmarked car used by the FBI. The car has emergency lights in the front grill and inside the windshield.
The 2006 silver Grand Prix was stolen at about 1:30 p.m. from the Century Buick Pontiac GMC dealership at 3308 W. Hillsborough Ave. According to Tampa police, a mechanic was working on the car when he noticed a man loitering nearby. A short time later when his attention was diverted, the man stole the car, according to police.
The four-door car is silver and has a Florida tag, X74ILY. Police say there are no weapons in the vehicle and the police radio is inoperable.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic man, about 30 years old, 6 feet tall, with a missing front tooth. He was wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans and black shoes.
Tampa police ask that anyone seeing the car call 9-1-1.
Police also offer the following tips for anyone pulled over by an unmarked car with emergency lights:
Stop your vehicle in a well-lit area, preferably at a location with high pedestrian traffic nearby. Excellent locations would include gas stations, schools, stores or restaurant parking lots. You also have the option of driving to your nearest police station.
Call 9-1-1 if you have a cell phone and advise the dispatcher that an unmarked police vehicle is attempting to stop you. The dispatcher can confirm if the stop is legitimate and send a uniformed officer to the scene if necessary.
Do not speed away from the unmarked vehicle but instead motion to the driver of the vehicle to follow you. You then should drive in a safe manner to the nearest safe location.
