A Tampa man has been charged with attempted second-degree murder.
Tampa police arrested Mario Neil Fernandez, 21, at 6 p.m. Friday at his home, 8526 N. Newport Ave.
He was charged with attempted murder with a bat and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.
About 3:30 a.m., Fernandez approached two people at 4021 W. Hillsborough Ave. and began an argument, an arrest report states. The people told Fernandez to leave them alone. When Fernandez came back, one of the people involved in the argument took out a badge, claimed to be a federal agent and told Fernandez again to leave.
Fernandez took out an aluminum baseball bat and struck a person in the face, breaking the person's left cheek bone, the arrest report states. Fernandez then used the bat to strike the person claiming to be the federal agent several times in the head, causing cuts. The second victim needed several staples in his head so the wounds could be closed.
More details weren't immediately available.
Fernandez, described by the Hillsborough County Jail Web site as a self-employed plumber, remained in Orient Road Jail late Friday. His bail had not been set.
