TAMPA - A man suffered a head injury late Thursday after being struck by a freight train while lying on railroad tracks, police said.
Robert James Kolvinsky, 47, of Tampa was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital for treatment. He was listed in critical condition today.
Tampa police said the crew of an eastbound CSX train saw Kolvinsky lying on the tracks along Busch Boulevard, between Florida and Nebraska avenues, shortly before midnight.
The crew activated the train's horn and emergency brakes, but the man did not move and the train was unable to stop before striking him with the "cattle catcher" on the front of the locomotive, police said.
Officers who responded to the incident detected a strong odor of alcohol on Kolvinsky, police said.
None of the train crew was injured.
