Lakeland woman killed in 2-car wreck

A 58-year-old woman was killed this morning in a two-car wreck on State Road 570 in Polk County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Marilyn J. Whelan, of Lakeland, was pronounced dead at the scene, the patrol said.

At 8:35 a.m., 78-year-old Frances Jean Kazen of Largo was driving her car east on S.R. 570 when her car veered into the next lane and struck a sport utility vehicle driven by Michael Whelan, the patrol said.

The SUV spun into the median and overturned several times, ejecting Marilyn Whelan, the patrol said.

Kazen suffered minor injuries and was taken to Winter Haven Hospital. Michael Whelan, 67, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, the patrol said.

Kazen and Michael Whelan were wearing seat belts but Marilyn Whelan was not, the patrol said.
