DADE CITY - A Pasco County Sheriff's Office deputy was honored 100 years after he was killed in the line of duty.
Sheldon S. Nicks, who was killed in the Fivay settlement on May 8, 1909, was honored at Friday night's Pasco Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial service at the historic Pasco County Courthouse. Nicks was among seven officers recognized at the service. In addition to sheriff's office representatives, officers from city, state and federal agencies participated.
According to newspaper accounts from the time and recollections of family members, Nicks was a deputy sheriff who was killed by a man he and his father attempted to arrest.
