Thousands of University of South Florida graduates will enjoy a walk to the stage this weekend, but once they get there, the university president won't extend her hand.
"It has been decided that there will be no handshaking at commencement ceremonies due to the recent outbreak of swine flu and the spreading of germs through touching," USF chief of staff Cindy Visot wrote Friday to deans and vice presidents.
University officials decided that the risk of transmission through the traditional handshake was too great. President Judy Genshaft and other deans could shake the hand of an infected student and pass on those germs to another graduate.
Genshaft will take photos with each grad. There also will be hand sanitizing stations throughout the Sun Dome.
