I believe we have already outstripped our most vital resource - water. If the current dry spell became permanent, many people would have to leave Florida for there to be adequate water for those who remained. But it doesn't work that way. Dry spells become wet spells. Developers point to the excess water and develop with abandon. They seem to want us to thank them for filling in wet areas and reducing mosquito growth.
But inevitably, the wet spell becomes a dry spell again, and always seems to be much worse than the last one. It isn't, but it always seems that way, for there are so many more people sucking on the straw.
Why doesn't the Tribune report weekly or monthly on the number of new residential water connections approved by the various government agencies? This number could be converted to approximate gallons. Now that could open some eyes.
