NEW PORT RICHEY - Morton Plant North Bay Hospital recently unveiled the name of its new patient wing, Starkey Medical Tower.
The name reflects the $1 million gift from Jay B and Marsha Starkey for the campus renovation and expansion at 6600 Madison St. in New Port Richey.
"We are so grateful to the Starkey family for taking a lead in supporting what we believe will be one of the most significant advancements for medical care in west Pasco," John Couris, the hospital's chief operating officer, said in a news release.
North Bay Hospital officials conducted a "topping out" ceremony as construction workers placed the final beam on the structure.
The new Starkey Medical Tower will increase the number of beds by 25 percent. The addition will include a new intensive care unit, cardiac unit, medical surgical unit and respiratory care department.
Plans call for the expansion to be complete during the first quarter of 2010.
Other parts of the plan already in progress include a three-story medical office building and renovations of the Mitchell Rehabilitation Hospital. Renovations will begin in the next few months on the hospital's emergency room and a fitness trail with exercise stations.
