A 41-year-old Bradenton woman drove her car to the apex of the Sunshine Skyway this afternoon, stopped the vehicle and then jumped off the bridge, plummeting 197 feet before she hit the water, St. Petersburg fire officials said.
She was rescued was rescued within 12 minutes "by a U.S. Coast Guard boat that happened to be doing some training in the area" and did not drown, said Lt. Joel Granata, spokesman for St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue. She was taken to Bayfront Medical Center as a trauma alert patient and is believed to be in serious condition, with life-threatening injuries, Granata said.
The woman apparently drove up from Bradenton before she made the leap at 2:07 p.m., Granata said.
