TRIBUNE'S TWO-A-DAYS
Tribune Two-A-Days is a look at each Hillsborough County football team during spring workouts. Each day through May 20, the Tribune will provide information on two county teams. The spring jamborees are scheduled for May 22.
TODAY: Tampa Catholic and Berkeley Prep
Teams are listed alphabetically.
COACH: Mike Heldt
2008 RECORD: 7-4
KEY LOSSES: WR/DB Jonathan Armand, DB Chris Bartolomei, LB John Butler, NT Teddy Eumo, WR Evan Jones, DT Demonte McAllister, OL Eddie Rivera, WR Kory Strassberg, WR Edward Williams
KEY RETURNERS: RB Jesse Anaya, QB C.J. Bennett, WR/DB Justen Davis, LB/DL Tyler Gimbert, DL Ian Hopkins
KEY ADDITIONS: WR Jameel Gay (transfer from Sickles), DL Anthony Chickillo (transfer from Gaither)
SPRING FOCUS: Heldt said there's been a lot of excitement and bigger numbers. The Ravens have 85 players practicing compared to 60 the same time last year. Offensively, Bennett's responsibilities have increased. In fact, Heldt is so comfortable with the rising senior's knowledge of the offense, that he'll allow him to call some plays this season. Bennett led the county last season with 3,017 passing yards. With targets like Gay and Davis to throw to, the Ravens will continue to air it out a lot. Defensively, the loss of McAllister and Eumo leaves a big hole on the line. Heldt said one of the main things the defense is working on this spring is building chemistry among the new players.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Sickles (with Jesuit and Leto)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 5A-District 5
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 vs. Brandon; Sept. 11 vs. Spoto; Sept. 18 at Newsome; Sept. 25 at Hillsborough; Oct. 2 vs. Tampa Bay Tech; Oct. 9 vs. Chamberlain; Oct. 22 at Plant; Oct. 30 at Sickles; Nov. 6 vs. Gaither; Nov. 13 at Armwood
Katherine Smith
COACH: Sean Callahan
2008 RECORD: 12-1
KEY LOSSES: DL Ryne Giddins, LB Petey Smith, DB Angelo Hadley, QB Mywan Jackson, LB Casey Callahan, OL Justin Cabbagestalk, WR Rob Jones, FB Matt Eastman
KEY RETURNERS: DL Theodore Jackson, RB Matt Jones, LB Jermaine McKinley, WR Richard Jules, OL Fletcher Williams, DB Quinton Brown, RB Sherman Jessie
KEY ADDITIONS: QB Josh Grady (Freedom transfer), DB Khiri McQuay (Hillsborough transfer)
SPRING FOCUS: Callahan says he believes the Hawks have several talented young players, and that's a good thing because Armwood has a lot of holes to fill. Only six starters return from last season — three on each side of the ball. Armwood will stick with the spread offense, but coordinator Chris Taylor's unit will turn away from a run-first attack to a more vertical threat with the addition of Grady and a core of several young, skilled receivers. The defense has the talented "Man-Man" Jackson returning to anchor the line, which is a gift for coordinator Matt Thompson as he tries to find the rest of the pieces to offset the talent lost to graduation on that side of the ball.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Armwood (vs. Durant)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 4A-District 9
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Newsome; Sept. 17 vs. Tampa Bay Tech; Sept. 25 at Wharton; Oct. 2. vs. Plant; Oct. 9 vs. King; Oct.16 at Chamberlain; Oct. 23 vs. Hillsborough; Oct. 30 at Gaither; Nov. 6 at East Bay; Nov. 13 vs. Alonso
Adam Adkins
COACH: Dominick Ciao
2008 RECORD: 5-4
KEY LOSSES: DB/WR Julian Crockett, DB/WR Jordan Crockett, WR Nick Orobello, OL/DL Turner Richardson, LB Keith Bexley, OL/DL Harrison Wood
KEY RETURNERS: QB Destin Nichols, OL/DL David Turkel, OL/DL Chase Carmichael, LB Mark Timmel, LB Matt Dowdle, LB Rich Klein, DB Byrne Marston, DE Reggie Barnes, DE Tyler Davis, DB Nelson Agholor, FB Kevin Yent
KEY ADDITIONS: None
SPRING FOCUS: With final exams taking place this week, the Bucs had only 12 days of training before their spring jamboree game with Lake Highland Prep. Ciao says the key to his team's success will be the offensive and defensive lines. That's in part because of the loss of leading rusher Julian Crockett and the continued need to develop rising sophomore quarterback Destin Nichols. Berkeley is also moving to a new classification — 1A-District 6 — where it will take on 2008 state finalist Fort Meade, as well as perennial power Clearwater Central Catholic. Going into his third season, Ciao believes he has players who have been in the system long enough to know exactly what he expects from his players — excellence.
JAMBOREE: Lost to Orlando Lake Highland Prep 17-0 on May 15
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 1A-District 6
2009 SCHEDULE: !Sept. 4 at St. Pete Catholic; Sept. 11 at Tampa Catholic; Sept. 18 vs. Lake High. Prep; Sept. 25 at Clearwater CC; Oct. 2 vs. Hudson; Oct. 9 at Lakeland Chr.; Oct. 23 vs. Fort Meade; Oct. 30 vs. WP Trinity Prep; Nov. 6 vs. Indian Rocks
Bill Ward
COACH: Harry Hubbard
2008 RECORD: 1-9
KEY LOSSES: DE Montrey Pride, OL/DL Gerald Dickens
KEY RETURNERS: TE/DE Michael McFarland, QB Eugene Davenport, WR Phillip Davis, WR Clarence Peterson, OL/DL George Taliaferro
SPRING FOCUS: First-year coach and former Middleton head coach Hubbard takes over the program to replace Sean Washington, who is now an assistant at Chamberlain. Due to low turnouts for spring practice (Hubbard said the highest number was 20), many players will have to play on both sides of the ball. Hubbard hopes he has enough time to develop the offensive line, his weakest position. McFarland is a Florida commit, and Hubbard is expecting great things from the 6-foot-6 recruit. With a season under his belt, Davenport, a rising junior, will continue at quarterback and Hubbard said he's progressed since the start of spring practice. Hubbard said the team is lacking a true running back but is confident one will emerge by the fall.
JAMBOREE: Friday at Plant (vs. Plant)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 3A-District 8
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 vs. King; Sept. 11 at Sickles; Sept. 17 vs. Middleton (at Raymond James Stadium); Sept. 25 vs. Spoto; Oct. 9 at Osceola; Oct. 16 vs. Hillsborough; Oct. 23 at Dixie Hollins; Oct. 30 vs. Lakewood; Nov. 6 vs. Jefferson; Nov. 13 at Plant City
Nick Williams
COACH: John Booth
2008 RECORD: 6-5
KEY LOSSES: LB C.J. Curran, QB Anthony Beko, DB Justin Mann, FB Greg McDaniel, OL David Laietta, LB Taylor Dunbar, DB Grant Gray, LB Brian Vazquez
KEY RETURNERS: RB Derek Johnson, QB Eugene Perry, LB Anthony Amos, DL Dan Jones, DL Chris Diemer, DB Christian Rehm
KEY ADDITIONS: None
SPRING FOCUS: Booth, hired in March to replace Jason Stokes (now at Middleton), inherits a team coming off its best season in program history but one that also lost 20 seniors to graduation. Booth has been pleasantly surprised with his new team through the first week of spring practice, and he believes he's got a solid group of players — with a nice mix of size, skill and athleticism — that is capable of keeping this program heading in the right direction. Booth is switching things up. In addition to moving some players around to new positions — like Amos from fullback to linebacker — the Bulls are implementing new systems under coordinators James Booth (offensive), the brother of the head coach, and Melvin Jenkins (defensive).
JAMBOREE: May 22 at East Bay (vs. Brandon)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 5A-District 6
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Lennard; Sept. 11 vs. East Bay; Sept. 17 at Leto; Sept. 25 at Durant; Oct. 9 vs. Plant City; Oct. 16 at Freedom; Oct. 22 vs. Newsome; Oct. 30 vs. King; Nov. 6 at Riverview; Nov. 13 vs. Brandon
Adam Adkins
COACH: John Lima
2008 RECORD: 2-8
KEY LOSSES: DB DeAndre Bowers, OL Danny Gonzalez, OL Ben Harrison, RB/WR Greg LaClair, DB Dominique Lee, OL Chaz Austin, LB Ronnie Suggs
KEY RETURNERS: LB Sean Council, WR/DB Sean Watson, QB Josh Celerin, RB/DB Darius Lee, DE/TE Travis Green
KEY ADDITIONS: None
SPRING FOCUS: The Eagles are going to use these few weeks of spring workouts to experiment a bit, as Lima plans to work most players in several positions to see where their talent can be utilized best. For the most part, all starting positions in the fall are open, and there should be some good competition this spring. Brandon was ravaged by injuries last fall, and a lot of young players — including 13 freshmen — were pressed into vital roles. Most of those players are back but still a little green in some areas, and Lima hopes they can mature quickly. Finding some replacements in the secondary, which lost three starters to graduation, and someone to step in for Harrison at center are the Eagles' biggest concerns.
JAMBOREE:May 22 at East Bay (vs. Bloomingdale)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 5A-District 7
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Alonso; Sept. 11 at Durant; Sept. 17 vs. Plant City; Sept. 25 at East Bay; Oct. 2 vs. Sickles; Oct. 9 vs. Wharton; Oct. 23 vs. Tampa Bay Tech; Oct. 30 vs. Chamberlain; Nov. 6 at Freedom; Nov. 13 at Bloomingdale
Adam Adkins
COACH: John Kelly (resigning after spring drills)
2008 RECORD: 2-8
KEY LOSSES: RB/DB Micah Lewis, QB Etienne Turner, OL/DL Mitchell Brown, RB/DB Ryan Campbell, OL/DL Jason Barnett
KEY RETURNERS: WR Dixon Phillips, RB/LB Chris Brown, QB Hayden Kelley, LB Logan McDougall, WR Damarcus Faison, OL/DL Martin Brown
SPRING FOCUS: Fundamentals. Kelly is using the next couple of weeks as a developmental period for his young squad while working to create some depth. Depth is always an issue for the small-school program, but several younger players should get plenty of extra reps with three key contributors - Brown, Kelley and McDougall - missing an undetermined amount of time while playing for the school's baseball team, which is still alive in the state playoffs. The Lancers do have a new face running the defense, as Kelly hired new coordinator Bill Paluch, who comes from Indian Rocks Christian and will replace Steve Lewis, who was hired to start the football program at Seffner Christian. Offensively, Kelly believes Phillips is set for a breakout season. Phillips probably won't get a chance to establish any rhythm this spring with Kelley, who is penciled in as the starter, but he'll still get plenty of work with backup Michael McDermott.
SPRING GAME: May 23 at Northside Christian
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 1B-District 5
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4. at Carrollwood Day Prep; Sept. 18 at Bradenton Christian; Sept. 25 at Keswick Christian; Oct. 2 at Calvary Christian; Oct. 9 vs. Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic; Oct. 16 vs. Lake Wales Vanguard; Oct. 23 at Admiral Farragut; Oct. 30 at Winter Haven All Saints'; Nov. 6 vs. Lakeland Victory Christian; Nov. 13 vs. Indian Rocks Christian
Adam Adkins
COACH: Lane McLaughlin
2008 RECORD: 4-7
KEY RETURNERS: QB Billy Embody, WR Matt Monteilh, RB/DB Darius Bing, WR/DB Deuce Gruden, OL/DL Mak Djulebegovic, OL/DL Sarge Patel
SPRING FOCUS: The Patriots' inaugural 11-man season is in the books, and it ended on a positive note with a victory over Leesburg First Academy in a Sunshine State Athletic Conference bowl game. The best news for McLaughlin is he will have some seniors on his squad next season, which includes Embody (2,027 yards, 18 touchdowns) and Monteilh (48 receptions, 747 yards, nine touchdowns), who combined as one of the area's top passing-receiving tandems in 2008. The passing game again should be the Patriots' strong suit, but McLaughlin plans to work Bing in the running game a bit more next season to make the unit more balanced. The offense also is getting a boost this spring as former Tampa Bay Bucs coach Jon Gruden, whose son plays on the team, is helping out occasionally during workouts. Shoring up the Patriots' defense, which allowed 411 points last season, is McLaughlin's main priority, so a lot of time is being spent teaching fundamentals and better tackling.
SPRING GAME: May 22 at Winter Garden Foundation Academy
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Independent
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 vs. Cambridge Christian; Sept. 11 at Oviedo Master's Academy; Sept. 18 at Ocala St. John Lutheran; Sept. 25 vs. Hernando Christian; Oct. 9 at Winter Haven All Saints'; Oct. 16 at Leesburg First Academy; Oct. 23 vs. Naples First Baptist Academy; Oct. 30 at Bishop McLaughlin; Nov. 6 vs. St. Petersburg Canterbury
Adam Adkins
COACH: John Colbert
2008 RECORD: 11-2 (5A region final)
KEY LOSSES: QB Dontae Aycock; RB Kenny Allen; RB Lamond Scott; WR Anthony Williams; DL Dontavious Pyron; DB Rico Valdez; DE James Wilder Jr. (transferred to Plant); DL Eric Hammond (transferred to Hillsborough)
KEY RETURNERS: OL Jarvis Henderson; DL Darrell Backer; OL/DL Derrick Venegas; DB Tony Robson; LB Andra Hubbard; DB Aubrey Williams; LB Corey Turner.
KEY ADDITIONS: QB Greg Windham (transfer from Middleton)
SPRING FOCUS: Only a week into his new job as coach, Colbert is still trying to familiarize himself with the players. "Every job is wide open," Colbert said. "It's a pretty competitive environment right now." The biggest loss for the Chiefs is Aycock (Auburn), the 2008 Guy Toph Award recipient. Colbert said there are three players competing for the starting quarterback position - rising sophomore Windham, who transferred from Middleton and is not participating in spring practice, Travis Hanchett, the backup to Aycock last season, and Thadeous Baxley. Defensively, Chamberlain lost two of its top returners in Wilder and Hammond.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Gaither (vs. Hillsborough)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 5A-District 5
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Durant; Sept. 11 vs. Wharton; Sept. 17 vs. Hillsborough; Sept. 25 at Tampa Bay Tech;Oct. 2 vs. Plant City; Oct. 9 at Alonso; Oct. 16 vs. Armwood; Oct. 22 at Gaither; Oct. 30 at Brandon; Nov. 6 vs. Plant
Nick Williams
COACH: Mike Gottman
2008 RECORD: 5-6
KEY LOSSES: OL Cole Gilliam, RB Ryan Rice, DL Austin DeVall, LB Marshon Shoemake, LB Billy Whitcomb, DL Colton Bridges
KEY RETURNERS: QB Je'Twan Smith, RB/WR John Hicks, LB Ruben Garcia, DB T.J. Davis, LB Sean Kolanowski
SPRING FOCUS: The Cougars have a lot of young players without much varsity experience, but Gottman hopes several can establish themselves in the spring as contributors for next season. With eight starters back on offense, including playmakers Smith and Hicks, the most pressing need on that side of the ball is simply establishing some familiarity and rhythm with new coordinator and former Tampa Bay Tech coach Michael Bradley. The Cougars will stick with the spread offense implemented before the 2008 season. New defensive coordinator Kevin Kelley, the former Plant City coach who steps up from his assistant role last season, has a much bigger task as the Cougars return only three defensive starters.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Armwood (vs. Armwood)
2009 CLASS/DISTRICT: Class 5A-District 6
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 vs. Chamberlain; Sept. 11 vs. Brandon; Sept. 17 at Jesuit; Sept. 25 vs. Bloomingdale; Oct. 2 vs. East Bay; Oct. 9 at Riverview; Oct. 16 at Sickles; Oct. 30 vs. Plant City; Nov. 6 at Newsome; Nov.13 at King
Adam Adkins
COACH: Brian Thornton
2008 RECORD: 4-6
KEY LOSSES: FB Chaz Burrows, DB DJ Allen, DL Geoff Hayes, OL/DL Jake Anaya, LB Shane Cyrus, LB Tyler Hooks
KEY RETURNERS: OL Chad Fincher, OL/DL Dontavious Fleming, QB Aaron Mills, DB Calvin Sanders, LB/RB DJ Richmond, DB Deandre Reddick, RB Cody Smoot
SPRING FOCUS: East Bay graduates three of its four starting linebackers, a position Thornton wants to revamp this spring. Rising senior Mills hasn't been a quarterback since his sophomore year, but will return to the position for the 2009 season. Mills played at tight end and defensive end last season. Sanders, the team's top returning defensive back, also is competing for time at quarterback. Division I recruit Fleming will lead the defensive and offensive lines, and Thornton is confident with the returning players at running back. Thornton's main concern is securing depth at the core positions.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at East Bay (vs. Riverview)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 4A-District 9
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 vs. Plant City; Sept. 11 at Bloomingdale; Sept. 17 at Spoto; Sept. 25 vs. Brandon; Oct. 2 at Durant; Oct. 9 at Hillsborough; Oct. 16 vs. Riverview; Oct. 22 at King; Oct. 30 vs. Wharton; Nov. 6 vs. Armwood
Nick Williams
COACH: James Harrell
2008 RECORD: 4-6
KEY LOSSES: DL Coril Joseph, OL/DL Carl Saunders, LB/RB Sherrod Cunningham, WR Rodney Lyons, QB Josh Grady (transferred to Armwood)
KEY RETURNERS: LB Keith Lewis, DL Josh Tanner, WR/DB T.J. Mutcherson, WR Jacari Campbell, RB Amonty Delisca, OL Jimmy Dunphy
KEY ADDITION: OL/DL Jahari Moore (Wiregrass Ranch transfer)
SPRING FOCUS: The Patriots are under new management with the hiring of former Plant assistant coach James Harrell, who replaces Marquel Blackwell. Harrell will install a new offense and defense, and will need the entire spring training period to help his players adjust to a different system. However, the Patriots are already a week behind since the school was ordered to close this week because of swine flu concerns. Freedom lost its main weapon in rising junior Josh Grady, who transferred to Armwood. Harrell said the quarterback position, and any other position for that matter, is wide open during the spring, but did say T.J. Mutcherson and Jahari Moore will play valuable roles in 2009.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Freedom (vs. Wharton)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 5A-District 7
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Riverview, Sept. 11 at King, Sept. 17 vs. Sickles, Sept. 25 vs. Gaither, Oct. 9 at Tampa Bay Tech, Oct. 16 vs. Bloomingdale, Oct. 22 at Wharton, Oct. 30 vs. Leto, Nov. 6 vs. Brandon, Nov. 13 at Lennard
Nick Williams
COACH: Mark Kantor
2008 RECORD: 4-7
KEY LOSSES: OL Matt Childs, LB George Daines, RB Jarvis Giles, QB Kamren Hawkins, TE/LB Justin Lattimore, WR/DB Ronnie Mills, OL John Nenos, WR/LB Yemi Oyegunle, WR/DB Blake Smith
KEY RETURNERS: DB Jamal Allen, DL Angel Alvarez, DL Derek Bavol, OL/DL Demetrius Best, QB Dylan Fisher, OL Trey Gonzalez, LB Josh Scarberry, RB Ellis Williams
KEY ADDITION: OL Austin Kelly (transfer from Hillsborough)
SPRING FOCUS: The loss of Giles (South Carolina) has Gaither searching for an identity on offense. A host of backs, including upcoming sophomores Chad Pierson and Chris Joseph and senior Christian Juica, are spending the spring getting used to an offensive scheme that will operate a little bit more out of the gun this season in a two-back spread. Juica is one of the few seniors on a team that will be made up primarily of freshman and sophomores. Things are changing on defense, too, as the Cowboys are implementing a 3-3 stack scheme, which takes advantage of the athletic nature of personnel on defense. Kantor is spending a good portion of the spring trying to get the young guys to jell in the new system.
JAMBOREE: Friday at Gaither (with Chamberlain, Hillsborough and Middleton)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 5A-District 5
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 Sickles; Sept. 17 at Wharton; Sept. 25 at Freedom; Oct. 2 Hillsborough; Oct. 9 at Plant; Oct. 16 at Plant City; Oct. 22 Chamberlain; Oct. 30 Armwood; Nov. 6 at Alonso; Nov. 13 Newsome
Katherine Smith
COACH: Earl Garcia
2008 RECORD: 6-4
KEY LOSSES: RB Lindsey Lamar, OL Darren Baker, LB Jerod Brisbon, WR Colby Walden, PK Evan Colborne, DB Nate Singletary
KEY RETURNERS: DB Terrence Mitchell, QB Tarean Austin, WR Charles Lovett, TB Antonio Chow, FB Jamie Knott, OL Brandon McFadden
KEY ADDITIONS: DL Eric Hammond (transfer from Chamberlain), LB Michael Scaglione (transfer from Freedom), TE Jordan Duval (transfer from Freedom), RB Rodney Johnson (transfer from Middleton), LB Chris Oliver (transfer from Wharton)
SPRING FOCUS: With several new faces on Garcia's roster — including five standout transfers — the Terriers will need to get to know one another better during spring drills. Once they do, those transfers could have a major impact on an already-talented roster. For rising senior quarterback Tarean Austin, this is also time to take command of the offense at a new level of proficiency. He has been the Terriers' starter the past two years and now is the time to show he can not only take his team back to the playoffs, but also deep into the postseason. A new district alignment should make it hard for Hillsborough not to make the playoffs in 2009, but the Terriers will have to earn their postseason spot.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Gaither (vs. Chamberlain)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 4A-District 9
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 vs. Jefferson; Sept. 11 vs. Plant; Sept. 17 at Chamberlain; Sept. 25 vs. Alonso; Oct. 2 at Gaither; Oct. 9 vs. East Bay; Oct. 16 at Blake; Oct. 23 at Armwood; Nov. 6 vs. King; Nov. 13 at Tampa Bay Tech
Bill Ward
COACH: Mike Fenton
2008 RECORD: 6-5
KEY LOSSES: OL Jarrod Gant; DB Kyle Holloman; LB Chad Loreus; DB Billy Smith; OL Jason Tackenburg
KEY RETURNERS: LB Paul Brown; OL Manny Cromuel; WR Andre Davis; LB Otis Jones; DB Rodney Mills; LB/FB Fred Overstreet; OL/DL Kevin Reeves; OL/DL Kevin Williams; QB Quentin Williams; OL/DL Garrett Wolfe; Ronnie Wilson
KEY ADDITIONS: RB Demetrius Russell; DE Ramik Wilson
SPRING FOCUS: The Dragons are amping up the volume on offense this spring. Now that Williams has a full season under his belt, the rising junior quarterback will have a lot more responsibility. Behind a beefy, physical offensive line, Williams will lead a slightly tweaked and more complex offensive scheme with more passing routes. Defensively, the Dragons are as good as they've ever been, Fenton said, with a chance to make some noise in their new district. The main focus this spring, however, remains fundamentals. With a squad that still doesn't boast a lot of seniors, a back to basics approach is necessary.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Plant (with Blake and Robinson)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 3A-District 8
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Hillsborough; Sept. 11 vs. Newsome; Sept. 17 at Plant; Sept. 25 vs. Osceola; Oct. 2 vs. Wharton; Oct. 9 at Lakewood; Oct. 22 vs. Spoto;Oct. 30 at Dixie Hollins; Nov. 6 at Blake; Nov. 13 vs. Middleton
Katherine Smith
COACH: Joe Ross
2008 RECORD: 6-4
KEY LOSSES: LB Michael Camoureux, RB Greg Dupell, LB P.J. Hobson, DB Mike McEney, WR Erick McGriff, DB Michael Miller, TE John Plasencia, DT Justin Taylor
KEY RETURNERS:QB Bobby Eveld, RB Robby Garcia, WR Ben Gutowski, OL Randy Ramos, DE Calvin Ruff, OL Charles
KEY ADDITIONS: None
SPRING FOCUS: With six starters returning on offense, the Tigers are spending the spring trying to teach the underclassmen how to compete for playing time. The losses of McGriff (Kansas) and Plasencia (Northwestern) means Eveld will have to find new go-to targets. Coach Ross said Eveld has matured emotionally and physically. In the second year in Jesuit's spread offense, Eveld is showing a greater command of the scheme and is getting looks from several Division I programs, including North Carolina State, Michigan State, Connecticut, Virginia and Marshall. The Tigers lost a lot on defense from last season, mostly in the secondary. But Ross said there is a lot of young talent ready to fill those starting spots.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Alonso (with Leto and Sickles)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 2A-District 5
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Kathleen; Sept. 11 at Sarasota; Sept. 17 Durant; Oct. 2 at Robinson; Oct. 9 at Lennard; Oct. 30 at Middleton; Nov. 6 St. Petersburg; Nov. 13 Tampa Catholic
Katherine Smith
COACH: Alvin Davis
2008 RECORD: 3-7
KEY LOSSES: RB/DB Donovan Celerin, LB Adrian Fredrick, QB Keith Graham, FB Rodney Pugh, DB Travis Reynolds, DB Josh Ruffin, DE Travis Simmons, OL/DL Justin Smith
KEY RETURNERS: LB Carlos Wooten, WR/DB Cedric Young, QB Reese Sturgis, LB Patrick Clarke, OL/DL Chioke Marshall, OL/DL John Marley
KEY ADDITIONS: DB D'Andre Fulton (Tampa Bay Tech transfer), RB Jameel Jackson (Tampa Bay Tech transfer)
SPRING FOCUS: King lost 12 seniors from the 2008 squad but also returns 15 starters, giving Davis reason for optimism in 2009. The best news is nearly all the skill position players are back on offense, which is a gift for new coordinator Trey Thomas. That includes Sturgis, who began the 2008 season as the starting quarterback before suffering a season-ending injury. King's defense, which will be led by new coordinator Demetrius "Bass" Dillard, returns a bulk of experience on the line, but the linebacker corps, led by Wooten, should be the strongest on the unit. The biggest focus for Davis this spring is not on the field, however, but in the classroom. He's making it known that if anyone wants to be a part of Lions football, they'll have to first demonstrate being sound academically.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Freedom (vs. Tampa Bay Tech)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 4A-District 9
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Blake Sept. 11 vs. FreedomSept. 17 vs. Robinson Oct. 2 at Leto Oct. 9 at Armwood Oct. 16 vs. Tampa Bay TechOct. 22 vs. East Bay Oct. 30 at Bloomingdale Nov. 6 at Hillsborough Nov. 13 vs. Durant
Adam Adkins
COACH: George Edington
2008 RECORD: 4-6
KEY LOSSES: QB Andrew Burdick, WR Blake Kennedy, WR Brandon Stephens, SS/RB Carlos Martinez
KEY RETURNERS: WR Demyco Winston Jr., RB/SS Tevin Abbney, LB David Sanders, DL/OL Leroy Campbell
KEY ADDITION: QB/K Brandon Peterson (transfer from East Bay)
SPRING FOCUS: Lennard's biggest hole to fill will be quarterback with the loss of Burdick to graduation. Edington said working out rising sophomore Shannon Gaines (5-foot-10) will be his main focus during the spring. Peterson also should compete for the starting quarterback job, Edington said. The Longhorns graduated their top receivers in Kennedy and Stephens, but Edington is confident the returning group is capable of replacing their production. By the end of last season, Edington said, Winston (6-5, 190) had emerged as a go-to player. He also said the junior could become the program's first major Division I recruit.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Spoto (vs. Lennard)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 2A-District 5
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 vs. Bloomingdale; Sept. 11 at Leto; Sept. 18 at Riverview; Sept. 25 at St. Pete Catholic; Oct. 2 vs. Middleton; Oct. 9 vs. Jesuit; Oct. 22 vs. Robinson; Nov. 13 vs. Freedom
Nick Williams
COACH Hugh Dehnert
2008 RECORD: 3-7
KEY LOSSES: OL Chris Cassagne, LB Luis Herrera, WR Antwoun Howard, DL Ken McAllister, TE Adolfo Navarro
KEY RETURNERS: RB Jeremy Deering, OL Michael DeJesus, DB/LB Lorenzo Laporte, DB P.J. Leto, OL/DL Justin McKeon, DL Barrington McNutt, K Luis Rodriguez, OL Cody Sharp, OL Kyle Thwaites, DB/LB Fred Timmons, DB Brandon Toombs, WR Van Watkins
KEY ADDITIONS: QB Dominic Marino (transfer from Gaither), LB Jahmeire Caldwell (transfer from Palatka), WR Micah Leon (transfer from Gaither), LB Anthony Corominas (transfer from Alonso)
SPRING FOCUS: Deering has brought a lot of attention to Leto this spring. The Falcons' football field has been a hub of activity, with college coaches visiting to get a glimpse of the rising senior in person. With nearly 20 Division I scholarship offers, Deering will again be the focus of Leto's offense. He split time between quarterback and running back last season to compile more than 1,000 yards, but with new addition Marino, Deering should mainly get to focus as a tailback. A larger and more physical offensive line should also lead to greater offensive numbers. Defensively, with a secondary comprised of Laporte, Leto, Timmons and Toombs, Leto will have its usual speed. On the line, however, someone needs to emerge this spring to replace McAllister.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Sickles (with Alonso and Jesuit)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 4A-District 10
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Robinson, Sept. 11 Lennard, Sept. 17 Bloomingdale, Sept. 25 at Boca Ciega, Oct. 2 King, Oct. 9 at Largo, Oct. 16 at Newsome, Oct. 23 Sickles, Oct. 30 at Freedom, Nov. 6 Middleton
Katherine Smith
COACH: Jason Stokes
2008 RECORD: 2-8
KEY LOSSES: OL/DL Luis Polanco, DL Andreal Coleman, DB Travis Buie, SS Phillip Jones, QB Greg Windham (transferred to Chamberlain), LB Greg Hickman (transferred to Tampa Bay Tech), RB Rodney Johnson (transferred to Hillsborough)
KEY RETURNERS: DB Ernest Mingo, OL Andre Gunn, WR Justin Sanders, WR Willie Clay, OL/DL Matt Parker, OL Cortez Young, WR Wendell Lewis, WR Maurice Campbell
KEY ADDITIONS: RB/LB Vasty Paul (transfer from Hillsborough), LB Josh Pease (transfer from Brooks-DeBartolo)
SPRING FOCUS: Stokes (formerly at Bloomingdale) will install a new system on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Stokes wants to give his best athletes the opportunity to make plays in open spaces. Defensively, Middleton will run a 44 stack formation. With the loss of Windham, Middleton will be without its starting quarterback from the 2008 season. However, Stokes said Clay, a rising junior, is handling the position and could be the starter in the fall. Campbell, a speedy receiver, has earned the starting running back spot.
JAMBOREE: Friday at Gaither (vs. Gaither)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 2A-District 5
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 11 at Plant City; Sept. 17 vs. Blake (at Raymond James Stadium); Sept. 25 vs. Robinson; Oct. 2 at Lennard; Oct. 23 at St. Petersburg Catholic; Oct. 30 vs. Jesuit; Nov. 6 at Leto; Nov. 13 at Jefferson
Nick Williams
COACH: Ken Hiscock
2008 RECORD: 8-3
KEY LOSSES: OL/DL Conor O'Neal, DL Frank Marin, LB Trent Cornwell, QB/DB Kyle Copack, TE Robby Young
KEY RETURNERS: FB Conner Powers, RB Keller Powers, DB Niko Anthony, LB Joe Worth, DL Shawn Boone
KEY ADDITIONS: None
SPRING FOCUS: The Wolves, coming off the best season in program history, are still a young squad. Newsome's roster is littered with underclassmen that played a vital role in 2008. The most notable is Conner Powers, who has rushed for more than 2,000 yards combined in his first two seasons. Hiscock has also been impressed with RBs Darnell Tucker and Devin Williams this spring. The talent returning in the running game should benefit QB Matt Klenke, the backup last season who is penciled in to start under center. Hiscock said the offensive line still needs to improve, and the Wolves must replace three key pieces from their defense lost to graduation (O'Neal, Marin and Cornwell), but the coach said he has been thoroughly impressed with his squad's drive and focus during workouts and called this the best spring by far during his tenure.
JAMBOREE: Friday at Armwood (vs. Plant City)

2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 vs. Armwood; Sept. 11 at Jefferson; Sept. 18 vs. Alonso; Sept. 25 at Plant City; Oct. 9 at Robinson; Oct. 16 vs. Leto; Oct. 22 at Bloomingdale; Oct. 30 vs. Riverview; Nov. 6 vs. Durant; Nov. 13 at Gaither;
Adam Adkins
COACH Robert Weiner
2008 RECORD: 14-1 (Class 4A state champions)
KEY LOSSES: S Hunter Baldwin, TE Orson Charles, L Austin Clark, FB Chris Hesson, LB Beau Hume, DE Javon Mention, QB Aaron Murray, C Frank Nicholas
KEY RETURNERS: DB/WR Eric Dungy, QB Phillip Ely, DE Anthony Harrell, DB Javonte Martin, LB Mike Mirabella, OL Andre Mondor, OL Tony Posada, WR/QB Deandre Queen, OL Jon Vega
KEY ADDITIONS: DE/RB James Wilder (Chamberlain transfer)
SPRING FOCUS: In search of an identity following a state championship season, the Panthers will have to replace several key starters. On offense, the Panthers have a lot of speed, but no real go-to target like Charles last season. Ely returns with valuable starting experience gained while Murray was out with an injury, and he also has added bulk through offseason weight training. With the largest offensive line since Weiner has been at Plant, the Panthers could run the ball more this season, but they will primarily be a passing team. The Panthers need to find a starting front four on defense this spring. Wilder and Harrell should make it difficult for teams to run outside on Plant.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Plant (with Blake, Jefferson and Robinson)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 5A-District 5
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 11 at Hillsborough, Sept. 17 Jefferson, Sept. 25 at Riverview, Oct. 2 at Armwood, Oct. 9 Gaither, Oct. 16 at Spoto, Oct. 22 Alonso, Nov. 6 at Chamberlain, Nov. 13 Robinson
Katherine Smith
COACH: Jason Strunk
2008 RECORD: 3-7
KEY LOSSES: DB Duran Lowe, LB Denzel Drone, QB Clint Stearns, OL Eddie Rosenbaum, LB Travis Vollick, DB Brian Goodman
KEY RETURNERS: DL Durrel Lowe, QB Bennie Coney, RB Dasmond Patterson, DB Raheem Billington, WR Cortez Hargrett, TE/DL Jordan Prestwood, WR Michael Harris
SPRING FOCUS: There are two big reasons Strunk is excited about spring drills. First, the Raiders return 22 starters from last season. Second, Strunk is here for spring drills after missing last year's workouts prior to his first season as head coach (he was still finishing out his teaching contract in Pennsylvania). Having spent all of last season learning new systems on the fly, Strunk believes the Raiders, with the core of the team made up of rising sophomores and juniors, are ready to make big strides. Plant City returns all of its skill position players on offense, which certainly should help Coney, a rising sophomore who took over as starting quarterback at the end of last season. Defensively, the Raiders must replace a pair of Division I recruits in Lowe (Wake Forest) and Drone (Michigan State), as well as one of their top tacklers (Vollick) and interceptions leader (Goodman), but they have the benefit of returning their entire defensive line.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Armwood (vs. Newsome)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 5A-District 6
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at East Bay; Sept. 11 vs. Middleton; Sept. 17 at Brandon; Sept. 25 vs. Newsome; Oct. 2 at Chamberlain; Oct. 9 at Bloomingdale; Oct. 16 vs. Gaither; Oct. 22 vs. Riverview; Oct. 30 at Durant; Nov. 13 vs. Blake
Adam Adkins
COACH: Bruce Gifford
2008 RECORD: 2-8
KEY LOSSES: LB Devin Ray, LB Shannon Burch, RB Eric Lampe, DB Willie Timmons, OL Ryan Gascon
KEY RETURNERS: RB Ronnie Johnson, QB Jarid Heffers, DL Jacob Farmer, OL/DL Bryan Giordano, RB Terrance Carter, OL Anthony Quinones
KEY ADDITIONS: DB Dontavious Gardner (Brandon transfer), DB/RB Jamal Stewart (Deerfield Beach transfer)
SPRING FOCUS: The Sharks have a wealth of experience returning from last year's squad, as Gifford welcomes back 27 seniors and 17 starters. While many of the players' faces will be the same, those of the coaching staff are quite different as Gifford made a major overhaul and retained only three assistants on the staff from his first season as coach. Heffers is firmly planted as the starter under center, and the offense is in good shape with the return of one of the team's top rushers (Johnson) and 4-of-5 starters back on the offensive line. The defense has a few holes to fill in the middle with the departure of two of the team's top tacklers from 2008 (Ray and Burch), and a replacement also must be found for the leader in the secondary (Timmons), but the players Gifford has penciled in to take over in those spots earned valuable playing time in 2008.
JAMBOREE: Friday at East Bay (vs. East Bay)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 5A-District 6
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 vs. Freedom; Sept. 11 at TB Tech; Sept. 18 vs. Lennard; Sept. 25 vs. Plant; Oct. 2 at Spoto; Oct. 9 vs. Durant; Oct. 16 at East Bay; Oct. 22 at Plant City; Oct. 30 at Newsome; Nov. 6 vs. Bloomingdale
Adam Adkins
COACH: Mike DePue
2008 RECORD: 2-8
KEY LOSSES: DB/WR Mike Hawthorne, RB David Canchola, OL/DL Mike Newman, QB A.J. Phillips
KEY RETURNERS: WR/DB Frankie Williams, WR/QB Ruben Gonzalez, LB Tevin Newman, OL Andrew Meddaugh, DL D.J. Woods, FB Robert Smith, DL Quinton Preston
KEY ADDITIONS: WR Byron Pringle (Blake transfer)
SPRING FOCUS: The biggest thing DePue is looking for this spring is to see if his deep 2011 class, which includes Gonzalez, Newman, Williams, Meddaugh and Smith, will show some signs they're ready to step up after gaining a lot of experience the past two seasons. Quarterback Blake Rice, who started at junior varsity last season as a sophomore, is going to get a good, hard look this spring to see if he's capable of stepping in under center next season. That would help open up the Knights' offense by allowing Gonzalez, one of the team's best playmakers, to shift out primarily to receiver. Robinson also got an added benefit this spring by getting set up in a controlled scrimmage against Lakewood that was scheduled for Friday, giving them some extra work in a game-like atmosphere.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Plant (vs. Jefferson)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 2A-District 5
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 vs. Leto Sept. 17 at King Sept. 25 at Middleton Oct. 2 vs. Jesuit Oct. 9 vs. Newsome Oct. 16 at St. Pete Catholic Oct. 22 at Lennard Oct. 30 vs. Steinbrenner Nov. 6 vs. Strawberry Crest Nov. 13 at Plant
Adam Adkins
COACH: Pat O'Brien
2008 RECORD: 3-7
KEY LOSSES: OL/LB Taylor Drane, WR Jameel Gay (transferred to Alonso), OL/DL Xander Morehouse, QB Cullen O'Brien
KEY RETURNERS: OL Shane Cordelione, WB/FS Danny Fernandez, WR Chris Nahat, LB/RB Scott O'Donoghue, CB Connor Page, DL Eric Taris, OL Nick Verlini, S P.J. Verlini
KEY ADDITION: RB Cary White (transfer from Chamberlain)
SPRING FOCUS: A lack of numbers has limited the Gryphons this spring. With about 35 players on the field, it's forcing most to play both ways. O'Brien said the numbers should pick up in the fall when he plans on practicing his junior varsity and varsity teams together. One thing that has increased is the number of assistant coaches. Several former Chamberlain assistants, including Brian Turner and Jeff Blum, have joined the team. They're implementing a new scheme, a flexbone offense designed to spread the ball around and one they had great success with at Chamberlain. The learning curve isn't that severe since a rash of injuries last year gave many backups some valuable playing experience.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Sickles (with Alonso, Jesuit and Leto)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 4A-District 10
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Gaither; Sept. 11 vs. Blake; Sept. 17 at Freedom; Sept. 25 vs. Largo; Oct. 2 at Brandon; Oct. 9 vs. Boca Ciega; Oct. 16 vs. Durant; Oct. 23 at Leto; Oct. 30 vs. Alonso; Nov. 13 at Wharton;
Katherine Smith
COACH: Dale Caparaso
2008 RECORD: 4-7 (forfeited three games due to ineligible player)
KEY LOSSES: DL Sergio Robinson, WR/DB Alex Byers
KEY RETURNERS: LB Rodney Williams, QB J.B. Burgess, RB Tim Randolph, RB Jamar Burns, DL Kevick McCray
KEY ADDITIONS: RB Charles Waits (Tampa Bay Tech transfer), DB Tyree McCray (TBT transfer), WR Victor Moore (Brandon transfer).
SPRING FOCUS: Defense was Spoto's specialty in 2008, and despite losing Robinson and Byers to graduation, Caparaso is confident the returning players will maintain the Spartans' reputation. Williams, an all-state selection last season, will lead the unit, while Kevick McCray is expected to take over for Robinson. Offensively, Caparaso said he will experiment with throwing more, giving Burgess a chance to make more plays with his arm. Spoto's running game should be strong with the return of Randolph and Burns, but the loss of Byers (434 receiving yards, 4 TDs) will affect the receiving corps.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Spoto (vs. Lennard)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 3A-District 8
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Wharton, Sept. 11 at Alonso, Sept. 17 vs. East Bay, Sept. 25 at Blake, Oct. 2 vs. Riverview, Oct. 9 vs. Dixie Hollins, Oct. 16 vs. Plant, Oct. 22 at Jefferson, Oct. 30 at Osceola, Nov. 6 vs. Lakewood
Nick Williams
COACH: C.C. Culpepper
2008 RECORD: 10-2
KEY LOSSES: QB Angel Rodriguez, DE Ponce McNeal, LB Marquise Mulkey, WR Antonio Wallace, OL Markeil Floyd, WR Leon Robinson
KEY RETURNERS:FB Maurice Hagens, LB Sam Jones, DB Jerome Speights, WR C.J. Jackson, OL Deon Robinson
KEY ADDITIONS: LB Greg Hickman (transfer from Middleton)
SPRING FOCUS: For the third time in three years, Culpepper will be grooming a new starting quarterback. This year, it's Jonathan Williams, a rising junior. Culpepper says Williams has been with the Titans the past two seasons, knows the offense well and with C.J. Jackson and Charles Davis, has proven receivers. With back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, Hagens once again will be the key to TBT's attack but Culpepper says he would like to make it a more multi-dimensional offense. With his staff attending clinics at Georgia Tech, expect that to happen. Culpepper says it's also important to develop more depth, particularly along the offensive line.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Freedom (vs. King)
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 5A-District 7
2009 SCHEDULE: Sept. 4 at Plant, Sept. 11 vs. Riverview, Sept. 17 at Armwood, Sept. 25 vs. Chamberlain, Oct. 2 at Alonso, Oct. 9 vs. Freedom, Oct. 16 at King, Oct. 23 at Brandon, Nov. 6 vs. Wharton, Nov. 13 Hillsborough
Bill Ward
COACH: Bob Henriquez
2008 RECORD: 9-4
KEY LOSSES: WR Kenny Broadnax, TE A.J. Mulkey, DB Ralph Grover, K/P Matt McLaughlin, DL/OL Brandon Green, DB Esteban Estrella, LB K.C. Schweiberger, OL Ronnie Barcena, DL Michael Aguila, WR Joe Joiner, LB Colin Carter
KEY RETURNERS:QB Christian Green, RB Henry McCloud, QB D.J. Williams, WR/DB Conner Louis, FB Daniel Sanabria, OL/DL Chaz Green, OL Austin Rossmiller, OL Matt Gibbons, OL/DL Kevin White, LB Brandon Mendoza, DB Jeremi Wilkes, DB Chris Lundy, WR Jordan Jones
KEY ADDITIONS: None
SPRING FOCUS: Tampa Catholic, which reached the state title game in 2007 and came within two points of returning to that stage last year, has clearly established itself as one of the state's elite programs. But to maintain that level, the Crusaders will need to find replacements for a defense that had losses along the line and at linebacker. Henriquez says there's an infectious air of excitement and enthusiasm in spring drills. His staff also enjoyed a record turnout of more than 70 athletes. With two solid quarterbacks on the roster — Christian Green and D.J. Williams — and 1,245-yard rusher Henry McCloud returning to power the offense, there's no reason to think Tampa Catholic won't be among the contenders in 2B this fall.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Spoto (vs. Mulberry), 6:30 p.m.
2009 CLASS-DISTRICT: Class 2B-District 5
2009 SCHEDULE: !Sept. 4 at South Lake; Sept. 11 vs. Berkeley Prep; Sept. 18 vs. Trinity Cath.; Sept. 25 at Lake High. Prep; Oct. 9 at South Fla. Prep ; Oct. 16 vs. Clearwater CC; Oct. 23 at Cardinal Mooney; Oct. 30 vs. Mulberry; Nov. 6 vs. Avon Park; Nov. 13 at Jesuit
Bill Ward
COACH: David Mitchell
2008 RECORD: 9-3
KEY LOSSES: QB Andrew Clifford, SS/WR Jairus Jones, OL Hunter Stout, LB/OL Chase Boswell, WR Brent Holloway, WR Khiry White
KEY RETURNERS: RB Malik Williams, RB Shane McEwen, DB Terrance Hicks, QB Ryan Hatter, OL Blake Nold, WR/DB Xavier Fisher
SPRING FOCUS: Paving the way for running backs Malik Williams and Shane McEwen will be Mitchell's main concern during the spring. The loss of Hunter Stout (Louisville) and Chase Boswell on the offensive line has created a void Mitchell said needs to be fixed immediately. Sophomore Ryan Hatter was the backup quarterback to Andrew Clifford (South Carolina) and Mitchell is hoping he can step into the starting role. Defensively, Mitchell is pleased with the personnel returning in the secondary, but said the linebacker unit will be a concern.
JAMBOREE: May 22 at Freedom (vs. Freedom)
