TAMPA - Following a medical examination by nurses from the school district, all 15 Freedom High School track and field athletes have been cleared to compete in Friday's Class 3A state track championships, Freedom athletic director Eli Thomas said today.
The Patriots' athletes were in danger of not competing due to the closure of Freedom this week because of a suspected case of swine flu at the school. All Freedom students were barred from extracurricular activities at the time.
After a compromise between the Hillsborough County School District and health department officials, it was determined the track athletes would be permitted to compete if they cleared a medical exam.
"They're good to go," Thomas said. "They've all been checked out, and everyone is fine."
Thomas said the athletes - 13 girls and two boys - were examined by four nurses this morning. He said the athletes had a review of their recent medical history, had their vital signs taken and also received a general physical examination.
