ST. PETERSBURG - A city councilman and the NAACP are asking that the street where 8-year-old Paris Whitehead-Hamilton was killed in a drive-by shooting be renamed in her honor.
The city council is expected to decide at its meeting Thursday whether to refer the proposal to the public services and infrastructure committee for a review.
Whitehead-Hamilton died April 5 when a group in a car fired on her house on Preston Avenue, police have said.
"In an effort to keep Paris' memory alive, the NAACP has requested that we change the name of Preston Avenue South (between Fourth Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St.) to Paris Avenue," Councilman Karl Nurse wrote in a request to put the proposal on Thursday's council agenda.
