Their deaths had never been honored formally until Wednesday. Port Tampa Police Town Marshal Joseph Walker, who was killed Sept. 25, 1915, and West Tampa police Officer Juan Nales, who was killed July 18, 1920, were among those memorialized outside Tampa police headquarters during the annual ceremony that pays tribute to officers killed in the line of duty.
There was a 21-gun salute, along with the sound of taps and bagpipes. There was also a flyover and a riderless horse. The city of West Tampa was annexed by the city of Tampa in 1925, and Port Tampa was annexed in 1961.
