ZEPHYRHILLS - The city has started running ads this week to hire an architect and engineer for the long-awaited fire station renovation.
City staff, elected officials and fire personnel have spent much of the past year debating whether to repair the flood-damaged downtown fire station. The city council voted March 9 to proceed with the repairs after staff was able to trim the project's budget to about $585,000.
City Manager Steve Spina said the project should be ready for construction this summer, so it should be eligible for funding assistance from the federal government.
"We're looking at stimulus funding and with the" U.S. Department of Agriculture, Spina said.
The city has scheduled a mandatory prebid conference for May 20. Proposals are due June 17.
The station has been out of service for more than a year because of water damage. Firefighters have been working out of the World War II Barracks Museum at the municipal airport since the January 2008 storm.
The city also plans to expand the drainage pond that serves the fire station and City Hall to prevent future flooding. That project should go out to bid this summer and cost about $125,000.
