TAMPA - About the only thing Cambridge Christian did wrong Friday was an on-deck batter didn't retrieve a foul ball, forcing the umpire to retrieve it.
"That was a young player and I told him Cambridge baseball wasn't about that," Cambridge coach Rick Shears said after his Lancers beat Lakeland Sonrise Christian 18-0 in five innings. "He was a young player and he knows it won't happen again."
What will happen again is another Cambridge appearance in the Class 1A-Region 3 finals and a shot at another state final four berth.
On Friday, the Lancers (17-7) pounded out 15 hits, including a double, five triples and a home run, and batted around in two of the four innings they came to the plate.
"I was very impressed with the way they came out in the beginning," Shears said. "The first batter got on base and it just multiplied from there."
Junior Logan McDougall was the hitting star for the Lancers as the left-fielder had two triples, an inside-the-park home run, three runs scored and four RBIs.
"McDougall is such a worker," Shears said. "Every night, he takes an extra 150 swings. I was so happy for him to get that because of all the extra work he puts into it. Maybe some of the guys that aren't putting in the extra work will see what can happen."
Every Cambridge starter scored a run and all but one had a hit. Starting pitcher Matt Fishman (7-5) scattered four hits in four innings. McDougall came in and pitched the fifth.
The Lancers will travel to Sarasota Out-of-Door on Friday in a best-of-three region final. Out-of-Door beat Manatee HEAT 8-7.
